Algo Sucede, the 8th and latest album release from Mexican singer Julieta Venegas has proven that she has the magic touch, as this new album is already shooting for the top of the charts, while the first single “Ese Camino” has been #1 in digital downloads in Mexico, Latin America and the U.S.
After leaving Tijuana NO!, Julieta Venegas began a solo career that had and indie, edgy, experimental and courageous sound, but as she became more popular, her sound began to change, and unfortunately, for many rock and indie followers, her sound, with some exceptions, became a bit too pop and formulaic, but just as some rockers were disappointed, her popularity sky rocketed and became one of most popular female singers in Latin music.
With her 2013 album, Los Momentos, Julieta went back to those sounds that first endeared her to the indie and rock followers with an edgier sound and shying away from proven musical formulas that some other bands like Maná have been using for over 20 years, and this new album, Algo Sucede, continues the same edgy and daring path.
Algo Sucede was recorded in Mexico and Argentina and contains 12 new tracks which were produced by Cachorro Lopez in Argentina and young producer Yamil Rezc in Mexico. The album in nicely balanced between up tempo songs and some melodic ballads but both with lyrics that are nostalgic and melancholic.
The first single, “Ese Camino” starts off with Julieta’s familiar accordion and then is taken over by what could be called the “Julieta Venegas” sound. On this song, Julieta seems to be looking back at her childhood and some of the fears and discoveries she went through and have made her the person she is as an adult.
The title track of the album, “Algo Sucede”, again starts off with Julieta’s accordion but with a sound reminiscent of her first two albums, including her singing style. The lyrics talk about when “things happen”, and to just let it be, even if that means changing the way you feel about things or someone from one moment to another.
“Una Respuesta” is a beautiful soulful ballad with a mariachi feel that matches the sentiment of the lyrics perfectly. The lyrics talk about trying to find the right melodies to sing your heartache away.
Algo Sucede shows a maturing Julieta Venegas, not only musically but lyrically; especially on the ballads where her voice shows a sensibility and vulnerability that makes it feel as if she was sitting in your living room singing just to you.
