ImageJoey and Dora are cashing in on their nightmares. The same bad dreams that have most people sweating up a storm under their bed sheets are making this Montreal duo an up and coming noted clothing line. “Akumu Ink”, Japanese for nightmare, is the pair’s creation that arose after a friendly get together. With a passion for Japanese culture, death core music and black and white indie comics, the team explored their inner conscience and dug up some pretty badass designs. Launched in early ’08, Akumu Ink is the in-your-face attitude that T-shirt aficionados have been dying to get into.

ImageTurning Fear into Bling

Akumu Ink consists of male and female T-shirt designs, long sleeve hoodies and canvas tote bags. The designs themselves are hand sketched by Joey and then tweaked into a pop art deco by computerized graphics. Hoodies run for about $50 and t-shirts range anywhere from mid to high twenties. Printed on American Apparel tees, a known manufacturer for indie fashion lines focusing on the T-market, each Akumu Ink piece is printed as soon as it is ordered and officially purchased. Therefore, there are no restocking fees, no dusted tees and definitely no “the warehouse guys sent out the wrong product” situations.

Aaah…to be an artist

ImageAlthough most of the designs are inspired by their own nightmares, Joey tells us that their overall lifestyle is an inspiration for their work as well. “We take different ideas and concepts and throw them all together,” he states.  Dora is currently studying to become a dietician and Joey whom used to play in a rock band is currently illustrating children’s books. These three elements-schoolgirl, music and literature- can be seen in the Akumu Ink designs. Their web site describes the “Tokyo Massacre” design as a “Japanese schoolgirl with chainsaw and hockey mask”. The design is precisely a combination of Japanese anime and dark humored perspectives. The “Nevermore” Edgar Allen Poe inspired design is also representative of the duos passion for dark, sinister culture and admiration for classic literature.

Attention “toe” detail

ImageIt’s nothing new that attention to detail always makes a party much more fun and an outfit all the better. So in spirit if such, the duo originally used toe tags (yes, the ones that label dead corpses at the morgue!) instead of plain old tags. “Now,” states Joey “for the first 50 people who order our hoodies we will include a limited edition paper toy.” With new designs hitting their Web each month, the sky is the limit for our friendly Canadian neighbors as they try to always offer something new to their customers. “We are still in the beginning of what we aspire to be,” he adds, “So stick around for the ride because there's a lot more [Akumu Ink] to come!”
