In the giant metropolis, concrete jungle that is Los Angeles and its surroundings, finding decent green areas is rather difficult. Yes, there are several parks, but let’s be honest here- they’re so run-down, tiny and with no more than ten trees. Thanks in part to this, and to the fact that we much rather watch Reality Television, going out for a jog/walk at a park or taking a hike are almost as obsolete as a walkman. If you’re into jogging, hiking or just getting a breath of fresh air every once in a while, you know that it takes a whole lot of research to find decent spots… which more often than not, happen to be a long drive away.
Hollywood’s SecretWhen one of my friends told me about a nice park and great jogging trail in the middle of Hollywood I was skeptical and even laughed at the idea. Right away I pictured a bunch of tanorexics and bleach blonde bombshells dressed in labels from head to toe taking their Chihuahuas for a walk… trying to look cute and avoid sweat at all costs. My expectations where quite low to be honest… but after hearing so much buzz about it, I had to give Runyon Canyon a chance. For starters, location couldn’t be better… Runyon Canyon Park is located by Franklin Ave. and Fuller Ave.; it’s well kempt and there’s green all around. Almost immediately my vision came true- I spotted a couple of hunks and bimbos walking their puppies; however they were the minority in the park. Instead I came across several people doing yoga, stretching and what not. Runyon Canyon
Depending on your stamina, your fitness level or on the amount of energy you have you can either choose to hike or jog your way through Runyon Canyon. Whatever you choose to do, don’t forget to bring plenty of water since it’s rare to find it at this place.
Jogging through Runyon Canyon is a rather exhausting experience since 50% of the time you’re going uphill, which is a great work out for your calves. If you manage to make it to the top you’ll feel like a million bucks, with sore calves and buns of steel. Even if you’re just walking and taking it easy, Runyon Canyon will give you a run for your money. But once you reach the top, you’ll see it’s all worth it. While the air is not at pure as you would like to- after all, you’re in the middle of Los Angeles… but the air is as clean you’ll get around this area. The view is just worth the drama trying to find parking and the draining hike. You’ll get a glimpse of Los Angeles like never before. You get to see pretty much everything- a clear view of the Hollywood Sing, the Griffith Observatory, the Downtown buildings, and even the beach. Reaching the top is definitely the highlight of Runyon Canyon; now that’s the perfect spot for either some yoga or a little snack. Workin’ on your fitness
Runyon Canyon is definitely one of the best local hiking trails. With its hills you get a great work out while enjoying somewhat clean air and a great view. Whether you’re into yoga or not, this is a great place to just unwind, relax and clear your mind. Weekends and weekdays after 5pm are rather busy, but don’t let the amount of people intimidate you… it’s actually fun, people are surprisingly friendly- who knows, maybe you might even find a new running buddy. Or score a date… you meet people in the least expected places and under random situations. But if you don’t make a new buddy, don’t trip, at least now you won’t feel too guilty after super-sizing your fries. |
