Every so often an album comes out that it’s so bad you can’t resist talking about it. There are bad albums and then there are BAD ALBUMS. Even though she has scored a few “#1 Hits” as a soloist after leaving Timbiriche, Thalía has never been known for releasing superb music. This time Mrs. Mottola returns to the music scene from her maternity leave with “Lunada”. It’s because of albums like “Lunada” that music aficionados all over the world condemn everything that has to do with pop music.
It is known to everyone that Thalía can’t sing for shiz. Everyone knows her limitations in the vocals and performance department; however, thanks to her je ne sais qui and her ability to deliver catchy bubblegum tunes, she has developed a ridiculously enormous fan-base. Thalía has tried almost every music genre: pop rock, Latin pop, dance pop, hip-hop, even banda… and her fans have supported and embraced everything she has recorded, not to mention the amount airplay that she gets with the release of every album. Nevertheless, with “Lunada”, Thalía might not be as lucky as before. Everybody knows and is well aware of Thalía’s status, she is one loaded chick. She knows how to make business, y por si fuera poco, she got hitched to millionaire music mogul Tommy Mottola. It only makes sense that with her money and her husband’s “experience” she would release a quality album or at least a decent CD. Instead we get some Latin pop rubbish that seems to be unfinished and nothing more than a half-baked demo. Not everything is bad news for Thalía and “Lunada”. She knows her market really well, and she knows that “the gays” won’t disappoint. After releasing a cover of “A Quien Le Importa”, Thalía became the queen of all things gay. Which means that not only she has “gay support” and approval, but “the gays” (including yours truly) will embrace and eventually like everything she releases- even if it’s crap and it takes more than 30 listens. Somewhat “Lunada” is like a Thalía time-line, you get to see the many faces of Thalía. She does a Ninel Conde Latin pop/ cumbia mish mash, she re-does one of her hits “Piel Morena”, she revisits her early rock-pop phase by delivering a cheesy tune reminiscent of Flans, she has a Juan Gabriel song… Thalía even ventures into song writing and into lite-reggaeton. Amidst the cacophony of poorly produced sounds reigns a sonorous medley that creates a “beach”/ campfire mood, filled with lots of smores, margaritas, sand and enough kumbaya bullshit to make you want to hibernate for the rest of the summer.
