Waving Hello
Waving Hello
Freak dancing, head banging, and moshing high school students are definitely not the norm at the Al Borde Lounge. But with “fashion” as the events theme of choice the second time around, this “Cool Careers for Me!” event pulled out the red carpet and stopped at nothing to ensure a fun, entertaining and educational event for its special guests.

The CCFM event held on Saturday June 14th at the Al Borde lounge invited high school students to attend a day of fashion, information, food and entertainment. Complete with give-aways a fashion show, and with its sole purpose to educate and encourage fashionista-hopefuls to venture out into the fashion industry, CCFM put fashion experts within the reach of dozens of high school students. “I’m here to provide information for those who want to go into the fashion industry whether it be about the colleges, resources or career options,” stated Roseanna Garcia from the non-profit organization Latina Fashionista. “I’m here to offer my services to these students in hopes that their dreams can one day become a reality.”

PASSION FOR FASHION

Celia Ramos

Garcia was one of the professional fashionistas who served as a guest panelist during the panel discussion. CCFM provided a forum where students were able to ask questions and voice their opinions regarding a potential career in the fashion industry. Taking the time to answer their questions even after the discussion was over, panelists shared some of their own personal career obstacles and career experiences. “I’ve definitely been inspired by the panelists’ passion for the fashion industry,” said South Gate High School student, Celia Ramos. “It’s great that they’re here offering this event to us high school students and especially to the Latino community.” Accompanying Garcia as panelists were Gabriela Hernandez, Cosmetics line creator for “Bésame Cosmetics”, Gloria and Adrian Tarango for “RedHotGear” clothing, Lupe Pérez the Senior Production Manager for “BEBE” and Cynthia Moorehouse of “Cynthia Moorehouse Jewelry."

Make-up sessions provided by “Zana Cosmetics” and hand-made accessories like those created by guest panelist Cynthia Moorehouse of “Cynthia Moorehouse Jewelry” were two of the goodies that greeted the eager crowd. “The event was awesome…it was rockin’! I had my make-up done by the people of “Zana Cosmetics” and was even asked to model some of the Cynthia Moorehouse Jewelry pieces,” stated Gabriela Maldonado, a student at La Serna High School. With make-up sessions, accessories galore and informational booths such as those of “Latina Fashionista” and “RedHotGear”, students were given a taste of what the rest of the afternoon had in store for them. To complete the fashion event, guest panelists contributed some of their pieces to the CCFM fashion show. Showcasing fashionable items modeled by randomly selected high school students, the fashion show introduced new lines of clothing to the attendees by providing wallet-friendly designs.

FUNKY FRESH

Ale But the event would not have been complete without the trademark Al Borde Lounge live performances. L.A. based metal band COATL and funky-fresh TORINO delighted the attendees with their latest material. The COATL performance that resulted in heavy head banging and co-ed moshing caused enough raucous to make the walls tremble…literally! (Props to ‘Ale’, the only girl moshing-it up with the fellas). But TORINO also knew how to pump up the crowd with guest performers “Chuck” from “The Tender Box” and “Viralata” former bass player of the recently split “Los Abandoned”.

WHEN METAL AND ELECTRO COLLIDE!!!

Manuel Trujillo
Manuel Trujillo loving the music!
Attendees were amongst the few to ever witness a live back-to-back performance by these two polar-opposite bands. Not even the Westchester which is known for putting on weekend gigs has meshed these genres together. But at Cool Careers for Me-and for the sake of contributing to the cause worthy event- these bands were able to do their thing and leave all genre labels on the stage. Manuel Trujillo, another student from South Gate High School, confessed that although he was unfamiliar with the bands that were performing at CCFM, witnessing the live performances gave him the opportunity to “discover two new types of music and be able to appreciate them as well.” Metal kids, pop kids and reggetonero kids all tapped their feet, banged their heads and shook their toosh in total music satisfaction.

After 4 hours of fun, music and interacting with fashion industry pros, the afternoon sizzled away with free give aways and an invitation to the next Cool Careers for Me event. Until next time, may the head banging, freak dancing and moshing continue at the upcoming Cool Careers for Me | Graphic Design!
