Fusing English and Spanish lyrics isn’t new. But, mixing English and Spanish lyrics with hip hop and cumbia and a touch of ranchera is a creation that takes creativity and thought. Skeey’s debuted with “El Bombazo” and his single “Pensando En Ti) gained wide recognition in Mexico. Born in Los Angeles, the Mexican/Puerto Rican rapper’s first break came from “Whoomp! (Sí Lo Es)” the Spanish version from the rap duo Tag Team. Skeey would later make appearances with other artists. “In the Latin world it’s a brand new movement. It’s a whole new thing going on. It hasn’t capitalized on the same kind of money yet but I think we’re getting out there we’ll be up there real soon.”
In his new CD “La Bomba, Que Onda” (Universal Music Latino) he has fun combing hip hop and Latin music by bringing back familiar phrases, forgotten beats and fun lyrics. “I loved rap since I could remember, the whole hip hop break dancing the whole situation like that,” he said, Now I want to do it in Spanish.” Skeey is a part of the rapid growing movement of Spanish hip hop that’s received acceptance in mainstream music. He doesn’t follow the trend of porn radio rap where everything is explained in graphic detail. His music isn’t freaky, but subtle where he plays with words. He isn’t concerned with the competition and comparisons of other artists. He brushes the dirt of his shoulder and moves forward. “Everybody’s going to try to hold you back or there are going to be groups or labels trying to knock you down because you’re not at their label but you just gotta stay up and just keep positive and hey you know what? You’re not going to stop me I’m going to keep doing my thing.”
