TarántulaIt has been several years since Mónica Naranjo released a new album, the year was 2001 to be exact.   Although her album  “Chicas Malas” was not a total flop, it didn’t meet everyone’s expectations and released the diva in her, causing her to go on hiatus.  Even though her glory  days were at the beginning of her career in the early 90’s when she was known as “la chica bicolor”- a  bizarre, hot and sexy Spanish female version of Batman’s “Two-Face”.   In spite of her diminishing popularity, Mónica Naranjo kept putting out albums that showcased her powerful and unique vocal range, without leaving behind catchy pop and dancey tunes.

Mónica’s voice is her biggest asset and her worse enemy.  On her previous album, she had “in-your-face” moments where her voice would just make you turn the music off and gag her.   On “Tarántula” she toned things down but without leaving her caterwauling trademark behind.  If she screams and throws her voice at you she does it with a purpose in mind, not just to show off anymore.

“Tarántula” is perhaps Mónica Naranjo’s most ambitious project to date.  It’s not bubble gum pop, it’s not dance, it’s not electronica, it’s definitely not prog rock--- instead she delivers a mix of all.   The cacophony of sounds seems to work well with her voice, as well as the lyrics and the intent behind each song.

The artwork in “Tarántula” is just as weird as the album itself.  So now that Mónica Naranjo has left the pop stratosphere and ventured into darker and unfamiliar terrain… seems like now she can begin a legit career in the music business.

Must [legally] download songs:  Europa, Revolución, Amor y Lujo, Todo Es Mentira, Usted, El Descanso.
