It is time to put all doubt to rest. Due to some minor similarities, many “non-indies” and “non-emos”, for lack of a better word, have characterized indie and emo fashion as one. Although both groups wear similar pieces of clothing like the popular “skinny” jeans, nothing can be farther from the truth. But who better to put this confusion to rest than members of each of these scenes? We’ve asked two representatives of each scene to better describe their fashion style and to tell us how they would make the “skinny” jeans a style of their own.

Celene Gonzalez, Lynwood, Emo scenester- “I wear skinny jeans with band t-shirts and converse, but not the way that indie kids wear them. I would add a studded belt and definitely a band t-shirt. I can go to Hot Topic and find a cute band tee or just wear one of the band t-shirts that I already have. I’d also add a hoodie with the arms cut off to go along with my outfit. I’d add black leather bracelets and my black converse. I’ve noticed that most indie kids wear bright colors but I wear a lot of black clothing.”

Patsy Pineda, Anaheim, Indie scenester- “Indie kids usually shop at Buffalo Exchange or at thrift stores, we’re more into our style and appearance. Emos usually just wear all black.
I would wear these jeans with a bright colored undershirt and a darker t-shirt over it. I’d also add a black vest to go for the “layered” look. Then I’d wear some cute flats and for accessories my many colorful bracelets.”
