John Connolly's "The Unquiet" is a disturbing mystery about various parties seeking vengeance for child abuse. Private Investigator, Charlie Parker, is hired by a woman who is being harassed by a man who calls himself Merrick.
Parker finds that Merrick has a dark past, but that Merrick has a moral compass that is not that different than the private investigators. Parker soon finds that Merrick may be just a pawn in a bigger, more sinister game.
"The Unquiet" is set in a Maine not so different than that portrayed by Stephen King. There are ghostly apparitions, a haunted house and other paranormal happenings, but Mr. Connolly's manipulations are more subtle than Mr. King's so that they seem quite plausible.
"The Unquiet" is a dark tale of good versus evil that features interesting characters, deceptions, lies, and mis-directions. The abuse at the heart of the story, though not terribly graphic, is so horrific that this book may be difficult reading for some.
