Bad Luck TroubleAuthor: Lee Child
Publisher: Dell
Year: 2008
Price: About $11.95

Lee Child's magnificent anti-hero, Jack Reacher, forged his legendary thinking and manhandling skills as a proud member of the military police. As an officer among the special investigators, he was truly the "elite of the elite." For the past decade, he has been wandering the earth, having adventures and living his unique, nomadic life.

But all that changes when one of his former MP Comrades gets tossed from a helicopter at 3,000 feet, and Francis Neagley, another of Reacher's old team, sends him a cryptic, alarming message via his ATM. It is a call to arms - you do not mess with the special investigators.

Usually, Lee Child's plots involve Reacher saving someone who is at the mercy of a diabolical schemer. In this case, Reacher does a bit of saving, but this case is more about revenge as more and more members from the old unit turn up as crushed corpses in the California desert. A Jack Reacher focusing on vengeance brings to mind Bruce Banner's admonition: "don't make me angry - you wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

Reacher also usually works alone. In "BL&T," Reacher has several allies from the old unit. Child does a decent job fleshing out these supporting characters and giving them plenty to do without spoiling the fun - this is Jack Reacher's show. And Child gives Reacher plenty to do, although it must be said that there seems to be an unusually high amount of number-crunching in this novel when compared to the amount of fisticuffs.

All the usual elements of a Jack Reacher novel are here - evil villain, hard-boiled banter, clever plot, good detective work. If you are already a fan of Reacher, you will read this book regardless of what any reviewer says. If you haven't yet started with Jack Reacher, don't start with this book. Go back to "Killing Floor" so you can have a sense of where this hulking detective/nomad comes from.

Hi, my name is Rafael Alejandro Acero Hernandez, and I'm an alcoholic.   I don't drink beer.  I'm addicted to chocolate.   I'm a bit bipolar and every once in a while obsessive/ compulsive.   I have a really short attention span.  I don't believe in labels, I'm not defined by what I do or by who I do- for that matter.   I'm a writer, an actor, a dancer, BUT nothing is better than being a professional a$$hole.  Soy un chilango incomprendido, y como tal- valemadrista a morir.
