The Basics: Open since 1967, the Bahooka Ribs & Grog is known as the “working man’s Trader Vic’s restaurant” offering a very prolific menu of tropical mixed drinks found outside the state of Hawaii: the Blue Hawaii, the Piña Colada, the Hurricane, the Zombie, and many others are all here. Some of them are flaming drinks and some arrive with the traditional paper umbrellas, fresh pineapple spear, and maraschino cherries. But be warned: their alcoholic drinks are STRONG. This lounge’s ambience has a dark, “Gilligan’s Island,” shipwreck-décor.  There are 105 illuminated aquariums filled with fish—as pets—to admire and occasionally, you can hear The Beach Boys’ music in the background.

Because of its location outside L.A. proper, Bahooka is noticeably void of hipsters. Most of the patrons are usually families and young couples on dates. Choose from more than 50 tropical drinks, each served on fire. The concoctions all have tiki-themed names and descriptions such as "Navy Grog (landlubbers beware)" and "Tabu (wahines downfall)." Several drinks are already made especially for couples but any can be made a double by request. Check out the fish in the bar's built-in aquarium. Or sit at a table tucked away in a cozy nook, facing what appears to be a ship's brig. Whether you come for a few drinks at the bar or for dinner in one of the maze-like restaurant's secluded booths, Bahooka is worth the gasoline to get there.
