In “Water for Elephants”, Sara Gruen explores coming of age, growing old and other compelling topics through the protagonist and sometimes hero, Jacob. At 93, stuck ina nursing home, he laments every passing day, every single white hair, every memory lost… everything that has to do with the passage of time.  He reminisces of his life, and wonders why he is in that current state of depression and pensiveness and his isolation from his family and relatives that deem him utterly irrelevant.

Jacob’s grim musings take a turn when the circus comes to town and sets up right next door… it all triggers a flashback to his youth during the Great Drepression’s bottom, his adventures after dropping off vet school to join a traveling circus.

The writing style is simple and easy to understand. There is no 'filler' - unnecessary, boring descriptions or dialogue that have nothing to do with the story. Altogether a delightful read.

Hi, my name is Rafael Alejandro Acero Hernandez, and I'm an alcoholic.   I don't drink beer.  I'm addicted to chocolate.   I'm a bit bipolar and every once in a while obsessive/ compulsive.   I have a really short attention span.  I don't believe in labels, I'm not defined by what I do or by who I do- for that matter.   I'm a writer, an actor, a dancer, BUT nothing is better than being a professional a$$hole.  Soy un chilango incomprendido, y como tal- valemadrista a morir.
