50th Annual Grammy Awards

After so much anticipation, confusion, potential sabotages and what not, the 50th Annual Grammy Awards took place last night and were surprisingly memorable. After an iffy awards season because of strikes and such, the Grammy Awards went by swiftly and even better than expected. As it is with any awards ceremonies, there were many hits and misses, we all know the hits and we applaud them, however- noticing the misses is much more entertaining.

The 2008 Grammy W.T.F. Awards

When it comes to awards, that old saying “it’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it” is not applicable. There were several red carpet disasters, and while it’s not okay to be a mess in the red carpet, some celebrities have the opportunity to redeem themselves by performing or presenting an award. This year some celebs went from Guatemala to Guatepeor with their outfits. Just when you thought Rihanna’s electric blue mini was a mere act of desperation and that she was saving the best for her performance she does the total opposite by wearing feathers and what seemed like a jungle print pillow case.

Surprisingly enough, the “W.T.F. was she wearing award” doesn’t go to Rihanna but to Tina Turner. Everyone was excited for her performance but when she walked into the stage, jaws dropped and not necessarily because of her stage presence but because of her “costume”. Not only was the outfit inappropriate for someone her age and body type but she gave a new meaning to wardrobe malfunction by not wearing a bra and forgetting to tape the girls. Yes, her performance was great and her voice simply amazing, but her outfit was just so distracting and hideous it took a bit from her performance.

The “W.T.F. happened to her face award” goes to Ms. Fergie Ferg. We all know Fergalicious is far from beautiful, she has a killer body and a charming personality but she is considered a “butter girl”- everything is perfect “butter-face”. Not only did the make up she was wearing failed do her any justice, her facial was just not done right. She might as well would have been featured in the chemical peels gone wrong E! Special. To top it off she was wrapped in a Gold silky toga-inspired gown that hid her humps and gave her some unfortunate lady lumps. We all know she works on her fitness, why not make the best out of it? Great performance with John Legend though, the girl can sing.

The “W.T.F. did she just do award” goes to Carrie Underwood. Last year she made it big with her hit song “Before He Cheats”, a very well done boy-bashing song that appealed to all- country aficionados or not. Yes, Ms. Underwood has come a long way since her American Idol days; however she still has many things to learn. Lesson number 1: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The arrangements to her song were just nauseating. Lesson number 2: S&M does not mix well with country. She wanted to prove she was versatile and edgy that’s why she wore that dominatrix outfit, she proved a point alright, just not a very good one. Lesson number 3: never, under any circumstances go to Britney’s hairstylist. So her hair didn’t look as bad ad Britney Spears’ VMA’s shtick, but it looked just as tacky.

The “W.T.F. where her parents thinking award” goes to Miley Cirus aka Hannah Montana. Even though she’s only fifteen she showed up wearing something a bold twenty-something would wear; her mini was too short, her hair was not appropriate, and her make-up was just as bad. She’s no sweet and innocent Hannah Montana, it’s the Grammy’s ya’ll- gotta show some edge, style and a new look. If she was going for the slutty white trash look she definitely nailed it, plus her porn star hair and her hooker make-up totally helped her achieve that new look. It wasn’t all bad news for Miley Cirus though, as she was showing off a new set of much needed veneers.

Highlights of the night

Not everything was a disaster during one of the music industry’s biggest nights. This year’s Grammy’s delivered several outstanding moments and breathtaking performances. Tina Turner’s duet with Beyoncé was off the hook, energetic and utterly entertaining.

There where two touching moments where the audience (including yours truly) had to fight off the tears. The first moment came with the Cirque Du Soleil/ Across the Universe performance. No matter what they do, the people from Cirque Du Soleil never fail to deliver beautiful performances and breathtaking choreography, but this time around with The Fab Four as their soundtrack it was just beautiful. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better Timothy T. Mitchum and Carol Woods from the film “Across the Universe” sing their gospel fueled rendition of “Let It Be”. The second emotional and heart warming moment was delivered by Kanye West. After a so-so performance of his single “Stronger” with Daft Punk, he did a piano and strings version of “Hey Mama” dedicated to his recently deceased mother.

One of the most anticipated moments of the night was Amy Winehouse’s performance. Was it worth the long wait? Absolutely. After several failed performances and public meltdowns due to her substance abuse, many people stayed tuned to experience a public meltdown via satellite; unfortunately for them Amy Winehouse’s performance was superb. Her signature beehive was impeccable, her voice simply amazing, she was sober and she remembered all the lyrics to “You Know I’m No Good” and “Rehab”. Although they tried to make her go to rehab and she said no, no, no; her short tenure at rehab proved to be quite effective, making her the big winner of the night.
