Gabriel ManelliBabasónicos fans and rock aficionados around the world are at a loss. Gabriel “Gabo” Manelli, 38, bassist for Argentinean Rock band Babasónicos, was pronounced dead early Saturday morning. According to the bands official Web site, Manelli’s death was caused by an invasive illness that he battled for a long time. Although it is yet to be confirmed, it is speculated that the cause of death may have been leukemia. No further details have been released, but it is assumed that the band will continue their plans of traveling to England where they are set to work on their ninth album come early February.

Manelli, whom in 2005 abandoned the bands “Anoche” tour to tend to his health, was part of Babasónicos since its early beginnings in 1991. With Adrián Dárgelos on vocals, Diego Rodriguez on guitar, Diego Tuñón on keyboards, Mariano Roger on guitar, Diego Castellano on drums, and Gabo on bass, the band released 8 albums, 5 of which were under the Universal record label, and the remaining with Universal Music. Among their greatest accomplishments were numerous MTV awards and Grammy nominations for best Rock Album of the Year.
