Sweeney ToddMaybe you've only heard of the blackly comic and ultimately bleak (yet excellent) musical because of the Tim Burton film version of in which Johnny Depp stars as the titular character. But "Sweeney Todd" was first produced way back in 1979 with a cheery Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett, the woman who literally helps Sweeney (demon barber of Fleet Street) make mincemeat of the townsfolk. This updated version is quirky and even more twisted with the actors playing the instruments onstage.

Urban Landscapes & Off the WallUpstairs at The Market Gallery is operated by The City Market of Los Angeles and is located in one of the oldest produce markets in the country, providing space for emerging and established local artists.  This time around, Upstairs at The Market Gallery presents two solo shows by L.A. based artists Nat George and Nuttaphol Ma.  George’s canvases and Ma’s site-specific works both echo ideas of history, locality, and belonging.

Are They AliveThe Chango Coffeehouse presents another eclectic and brilliant mind onto their premises-- Treiops Treyfid with his solo exhibit, “Are They Alive”.  Treiops Treyfid  uses holographic foil, polyester resin and spray paint to construct the image of a person face, by using Styrofoam wig heads to trace the image out, which gives the viewer the illusion of life in his creations. These pieces are bold and beautiful portraits that are not just plastered on a board--the holographic material makes them seem as if they are coming at you. It’s spooky, yet special.

Sex and the City: The PlayCarrie Bradshaw described the fragile, vulnerable realities of love and life eloquently in Sex and the City. That’s why the HBO show, based on the bestselling book by Candace Bushnell, was such a massive success--many women related to her; and if not Carrie, then you could definitely relate to Samantha, Miranda, or Charlotte. With every successful film/ show, a play on that particular film/ show sprouts up. Starting Feb. 29 at the Hollywood Fight Club Theatre, you will get to see the live theatrical version of the show where four beautiful fashion conscious women obsess about their love lives.
