Summers are typically reserved for Blockbuster movies.
The kinds that aren’t very likely to win any awards, but will get people out of the heat or drive families to the theaters in droves.
Something which hasn’t happened as frequently during the 2016 season as sequels and other big budget movies weren’t able to produce the hoped for audiences. As was the case with Independence Day: Resurgence, which opened in more theaters, and had the advantage of increased ticket prices due to general inflation and cost for movies in 3D or IMAX 3D, but still could not bring in as much revenue as the original.
And while Finding Dory may have been the exception to the rule thus far, most of the larger movies have been underwhelming, and lower budget films that have offered a breath of fresh air. Not only through critical acclaim and ticket sales, but also through audience reception as movies like “The Shallows” and “The Lobster” both scored high enough on the Tomatometer to not be considered rotten.
While we know Nerve is not a big budget film, it also remains to be seen if it will end up being one of those lesser budget surprises, after all Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 75%.
On one hand, the movie seems like it could be a modified version of Gamer, just with a largely more prudish character in Emma Roberts‘s Vee. On the other hand, it also looks like the movie could be primed for a twist ending that most wouldn’t see coming.
Either way, the movie looks like it’ll be filled with increasingly thrilling high energy sequences as the dares continue to get more aggressive dares for the players to complete. Adding in the watcher’s hacking abilities and Roberts and Franco becoming prisoners of the game as well just ensures that it will hopefully build up to an adrenaline pumping climax for the guys, while the chemistry between Roberts and Franco romantically seems to imply that it would likely be something that ladies who aren’t fans of the thriller genre might be able to get behind as well.
